You always hear the word copy right and fair use rules but what does that really mean and why is it so important. There are many exclusive rights that belong to a copyright owner. Some of those works include the right to make and distribute copies, to make derivative work, and to perform or display the work publicly. The authors are also entitled to the "moral right" on a article. There are several things that can have a copy right. Some of these include, artwork, music, even a website. It is important to respect these copyrights because morally we should not take credit for someone else's ideas. We as educators need to encourage children to discover and create their "own" ideas. It is ok to site others work as long as you use the proper documentation.
What is online safety and cyber bullying? These are two very important questions when you have kids at home or in the classroom that will be using the internet on a daily basis. Cyber Bullying is when the internet, cell phone or other devices are used to send, or post text messages that are intended to hurt or embarrass another individual. It is sad to say but it does occur today and if you take the proper measurements you can monitor this from occurring. Some online safety measurements are keeping computers in a central place, knowing when kids go online, talk to your students or kids about internet safety, inform them about stranger danger, protect passwords, and teach kids to communicate responsibly.
This weeks activities have been very informative and have opened my eyes to some new information. I was unaware of everything copy rights entail and really protect. "Copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution and granted by law for original works and authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression. Copyright covers both published and unpublished works." http://www.copyright.gov/. As an educator and parent I believe it is very important to inform are kids about copy rights and online safety when using the computer.

I think that you really got the grasp of this weeks lesson. What you said about teaching kids the proper way to use other's information to make their own ideas is just perfect. If we can use copyright laws properly then we can inspire our own thoughts and messages rather than just borrowing someone elses. This will be a huge task for us as teachers and getting the students informed on copyright laws will be the first step.
ReplyDeleteAnother huge part of our teaching will be influenced. What you pointed out about making copies is a large part of every teachers life. Handouts and copies, who hasn't seen those in the classroom? As teachers we must hold ourself to the copyright standards and make sure that we use the laws as well as teach them.
Overall this post is everything that CK asked for and it is everything important about the lesson. The way that you suggested the methods for dealing with students cyber safety is really helpful and so is the copyright information. Anyone who read this could know almost everything that we all learned this week!
Holly,
ReplyDeleteI have to say so e current teachers need to read your blog. It was very well written. I liked your thoughts on cyberbullying; it has surprisingly become quite a big problem. I was watching Disney with my son the other day and they even had a commercial talking about bullying through text messages. I thought it was a good use of commercial time; it showed kids how each person involved felt and how they resolved the conflict.
Thanks for sharing,
Heather
